Install Lunis
Turn a spare laptop into an offline classroom server. Download the release, write it to a USB drive, and follow the setup — the host never needs internet.
Before you install.
One host computer (the machine that will serve the classroom), a USB drive of 8 GB or larger to write the installer to, and a power source. You'll also want a keyboard and screen on the host during setup. Students don't need anything installed — they just open a browser.
Any laptop, mini-PC, or desktop from roughly 2015 onward with 8 GB of RAM runs Lunis at full capability. Machines from 2012–2014 with 4 GB still work; the software detects what it's running on and scales back to serving one student at a time. Lunis runs on Linux, so whatever the machine shipped with, you'll put Linux on it during setup — the full walkthrough is in the GitHub repo.
Plan on 30 to 60 minutes start to finish. Writing the installer to a USB drive takes about 10 minutes, host setup runs 15 to 30 depending on the machine's age, and first boot plus Wi-Fi configuration adds another 10.
Once, on whatever computer you use to download the release and write the USB drive. The host machine itself never needs internet — not during installation and not afterward. Once set up, Lunis runs entirely offline and broadcasts its own Wi-Fi.
Nothing you do to the host is permanent — you can rewrite the drive and start over as many times as you need. If the install stalls, the box won't broadcast, or students can't connect, send us a message below with the device you're using and where it stopped. We reply personally.
